I was featured in a piece on KVUE News about the effects of pornography, a piece stirred by the once GOP candidate, Rick Santorum’s position on pornography. The video is no longer available.
Mark Wiggins of KVUE found me via my website, contacted me and asked if I would be interested in being interviewed for a piece on pornography. Mark Wiggins and Doug Naugle came to my office, set up lighting, camera, and we talked for about 15-20 minutes. They also interviewed Robert Jensen, a journalism professor at UT Austin.
I had a most enjoyable experience being a part of this piece, and I think they did a really thoughtful job on a piece that could be sensationalized and polarizing.
In 2003, I completed my dissertation at UT Austin, The Practice of Pornography Consumption: A Qualitative Inquiry Into Heterosexual Men’s Perspectives and Experiences. While my dissertation was informed by Jensen’s work, I ended up working with Gigi Durham, also in the UT Journalism Department, now at The University of Iowa. I am greatly indebted to her guidance and mentorship as my dissertation co-chair. Durham wrote a fascinating book on the problematic social construction of young girls in popular culture, and the effects of these representations on the development, identities, and experience of both girls and boys, The Lolita Effect: The Media Sexualization of Young Girls and What We Can Do About It.
